Gurugram: After Kotka village in Jharkhand named its lanes after the most educated girls from the village, winds of change can be seen in Haryana’s Alipur village, 50 km away from Gurugram.
The residents of Alipur village have started putting nameplates of their daughters at the main entrance of the house.
Alipur is one of the five villages (four in Gurugram and one in Mewat) that have been adopted by President Pranab Mukherjee under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana initiative which was launched last year.
A house that earlier had nameplate of Pawan Kumar, a farmer; now bears the name of his daughter Monika.
Monika, a secondary class student, is curious and excited to see her name on the door of her house.
Her parents too are happy about this initiative taken up by the sarpanch of the village Mamta Dagar.
This initiative is a part of a campaign called ‘Lado Swabhiman Utsav’ and adds strength to the government’s ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padao’ campaign.
Home to over 5,000 villagers, Alipur plans to change the nameplates of over 700 houses. While some of the enthusiastic villagers have already changed the nameplates, some have ordered it with the names of their daughter or grand-daughter.
Ms Dagar has started another initiative that encourages families to plant saplings in the name of their daughters and granddaughters. The families that take best care of their sapling will also be honoured, she said.
As per 2011 census, Alipur had 1,789 males and 1,609 females of the total population. Haryana, infamous for its skewed sex ratio, has shown great improvement recently by touching the 950 mark for the sex ratio at birth.
